Install

The iTally server and launcher are installed on one computer. Every other screen connects to it over the local network.

  • One computer: a Mac (macOS 15 Sequoia or later), a Windows PC (x64) or a Linux computer (x64, ARM64).
  • The computer, the switcher and the phones on the same local network, with the switcher’s IP reachable by ping.
System Package
macOS, Apple silicon (M1 or later) iTally <version> arm64.dmg
macOS, Intel iTally <version> amd64.dmg
Windows (x64) iTally Setup <version> amd64.exe
Linux (x64 / ARM64) Debian package itally_<version>_<arch>.deb, or itally-<version>-linux-<arch>.tar.gz with install.sh (no root access needed)

To check your Mac, choose Apple menu > About This Mac and look for Chip (Apple silicon) or Processor (Intel).

  1. Download the package from the download section, then install it:
    • macOS: open the DMG and drag iTally to Applications.
    • Windows: run the installer.
    • Linux: run sudo apt install ./itally_<version>_<arch>.deb, or unpack the archive and run sh install.sh.
  2. Open iTally. On first launch it installs its background service. On macOS, a “Background Items Added” notification appears; this is expected.
  3. Click Open Console in the middle of the window to open the console in your browser. Next, see First run.

On Linux, the tray icon requires libayatana-appindicator3-1 (installed by the Debian package; GNOME also needs the AppIndicator extension). Without a tray, open the launcher window from the applications menu.

The launcher is in the menu bar on macOS and in the system tray on Windows and Linux.

  • Open Console: opens the console at once if the service is running. Otherwise it starts the service first and waits up to about 10 seconds. If the service fails to start, the error appears only in the launcher window.
  • Service status: shows whether the service is running; choose it in the menu to open the launcher window.
  • Start Service / Stop Service: a single menu item that changes with the service’s state.
  • Open at Login (on by default): the service starts when you log in, and the launcher opens with it. When it is off, choose Start Service when needed.
  • Open Log: opens the folder that holds the service log.
  • Check for Updates…: checks for a new version of iTally. The launcher also checks in the background.
  • Other computers (window only): lets other computers on the local network open the console with an access code. See Other computers.

The service runs in the background for the current user and needs no administrator rights. Closing the browser, the window or the launcher does not affect any screen. If the service quits unexpectedly, it restarts automatically; after Stop Service, it stays stopped.

System Config Log
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/iTally/config.yaml ~/Library/Logs/iTally/server.log
Windows %APPDATA%\iTally\config.yaml %LOCALAPPDATA%\iTally\Logs\server.log
Linux ~/.config/iTally/config.yaml (under XDG_CONFIG_HOME if set) ~/.local/state/iTally/server.log

Only your user account can read or write the config file. It contains the admin token and switcher passwords. Changes made in the console take effect at once and are saved to the file. After editing the file by hand, choose Stop Service and then Start Service in the launcher. If the file is invalid, the service does not start and the log explains why.

  1. In the launcher menu, choose Stop Service.
  2. Turn off Open at Login.
  3. Choose Quit, then remove the app:
    • macOS: move iTally to the Trash.
    • Windows: uninstall iTally in Settings > Apps.
    • Linux: sudo apt remove itally, or sh install.sh --uninstall.
  4. Optional: delete settings and data:
    • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/iTally/ (config file and service plist) and ~/Library/Logs/iTally/. If you skipped step 2, also delete ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.itally.server.plist.
    • Windows: %APPDATA%\iTally\ and %LOCALAPPDATA%\iTally\.
    • Linux: ~/.config/systemd/user/itally-server.service, ~/.config/iTally/ and ~/.local/state/iTally/.
